This new service combines the functionality of ‘traceroute’ and ‘ping’ programs in a single network diagnostic service. The Intelligent Traceroute Service investigates the network connection between the monitoring agent and a user-specified destination host. After determining the address of each network hop between machines, the service sends a sequence of 10 ICMP ECHO requests to each machine to determine the response time of the link to each hop.
